May is Mental Health Month, and Wellington Heights - along with many schools
in the board - is participating in a week long campaign. This year’s school
theme is ‘Smile’.
Smiling has the ability to make you feel better, even if you don’t know it.
Studies have also shown that smiling changes your body’s chemistry and can
lower your heart rate, steady your breathing and relax your body.
In an effort to get the entire school smiling, our week had students greeted
each day with something intended simply to elicit a smile: on Monday we
handed out bubbles; on Tuesday we handed out blank thank you cards for
students to write to someone; on Wednesday we gave out our ‘Smile Care
Kits’; Thursday morning students were greeted with cake; and Friday there
were freezies for all.
Every student got to personalize their kit with an additional item, and there was
a Smile Care Kit for every student in the school, as well as all staff.
